A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that healthy people who drank four or more cups of caffeinated beverages daily (mostly coffee) had a 53 percent lower risk of heart disease than non-coffee-drinkers. And there’s more. Caffeinated-coffee drinking has also been linked to a reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease, gallstones, cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Did you also know that coffee has loads of antioxidants? Even more of certain antioxidants than do blueberries. Maybe pass on the smoothies and pass another cup of coffee! These antioxidants, which are related to polyphenols in grapes, make coffee one of the top sources of antioxidants in our diets. Antioxidants help suppress inflammation in the body, which might explain java’s positive effect in inflammation-related diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
The list goes on. Multiple studies have shown that coffee helps reduce your chance of malignant melanoma and other non-melanoma skin cancers. And for women, coffee consumption helps depression, but increases the chance of miscarriage, so avoid it during pregnancy.
With a world that tells you this is bad for you and that’s bad for you, at least little pleasures like coffee are here to stay. So drink up!
